An Israeli soldier stands outside the Israeli settlement of Beit Romano in the southern Palestinian city of Hebron.
The enlistment to the Israeli Defence Forces is mandatory for all citizen of Israel once they reach the age of 18. The conscription length for men is 32 to 36 months and for women 24 months. Those exempt from military service include Arab-Israeli citizens, those whose religious practices prevent them from serving, as well as those deemed physically and psychologically unfit for service. There are also a number of those who refuse to serve on moral or ethical grounds.
